Mary Louise Brooks Nov.14, 1906 - Aug.8,1985
In the beginning... The Brooks family originated in Englandand as poor farmers the family boarded a merchant ship and sailed to America. Theyset down in Tennesee. In 1871 the Brooksfamily traveled via covered wagon untillthey reached Kansas. Leonard PorterBrooks was born in 1868. A lawyer with alongful wish to be the United States districtjudge, met Myra Rude. She was 17 yearshis junior at the young age of 19. Theymarried and moved to Cherryvale Kansaswhere Myra Bore four children: Martin, in1905; Louise, in 1906; Theodore, in 1912;and June, in 1914. Though Myra was amother it was in name only, reguarding thechildren as squalling brats, she expressedher dislike for children early on. Telling herhusband that she had taken care of hereight brothers and sisters, she had no wishto start anew. Mostly on the lecture circutMyra was one of the first to speak out onwomens' rights, and struggled to givewomen the right to vote. Although whenthe time little Louise was molested at age 9by a neighbor called Mr. Flowers, hermother became furious and asked whatshe did to the poor man that he would dothat. So... She was regaurded as one of themost beautiful women in Wichita. Sheplayed the piano exceptionally, and withDebussy being played little Louise danced.Louise began dancing at ten and at fifteenher mother enrolled her in dancing courseswith the famed Ruth Saint-Denis and TedShawn. She toured with the company in1922. At 17 she, in New York 1924, wasdissmissed in front of the Denishaw troupefor having a supirior attitude. She was alonenow, but not for long. She made a friend inBarbra Bennet who got her a job in the George White Scandels of 1924.There she met and flirted with the composerof the scandels, George Gerswin. But beforeeither could act on the flirtation, Louise arguedwith some of the dancers and left the show.
She moved on to join the company onLouie the 14th, under the direction ofTeddy Royce. When in front of everyoneMr. Royce intimated looking at Louisewho had just arrived last on stage,'Somegirls in this show are using theatreexclusively as a show case' When Louisesaw everyone turn and smile at her shebecame furious and ran off to FlorenceZiegfield, who was off stage, andcomplained about the mistreatment sheendured. Ziegfield saved her fromhumiliation by instantly transferring her tohis own Ziegfield Follies of 1925 with asmile. Where she worked with W.C.Fields. There she meet Peggy Fears, whohad straight hair the color of chestnut, whohad also transferred from Louie the 14thand who also had a sense of fun Louisefound attractive. The girl from Wichita,Kansas and the girl from Dallas, Texas, became very good friends.Even bestfriends by Louise's own admission. In factPeggy and Louise had a foursome withCharlie Chaplin (I don't know the othermans name). In the Algonquin Hotel, thesame hotel Louise was kicked out of laterfor promisquity.
